    Flory Dalia

Meet Juana Sanchez and nine month old Flory Dalia. Flory Dalia is severely malnourished. At nine months she only weighs 7 pounds 7 ounces. The Sanchez family lives in a mud and stick hut outside of Choluteca in the village of Montesillo. Last Sunday morning Juana and Flory Dalia showed up at church in Limon looking for J.B. They had received medical treatment at a private clinic in Choluteca. The physician and his wife are friends of J.B. and thought that he might be able to help this very poor family. Not only is Flory Dalia severely malnourished, she also has pneumonia.

It turns out that last Sunday morning Juana and Flory Dalia walked between four to five miles to the market in Choluteca where mother Juana then begged for change to pay for the bus ride to Limon in hopes of finding someone to help her sick little girl.

    Sit For a Spell

Living in Honduras requires one to give up many of what we consider our God given rights in the US. Actually most of the rights are given by our constitution and democratic government. In Honduras it’s very common to be stopped on highways by the police and be required to let them search your vehicle, why?.. just because! My shining gringo face probably adds to the problem, perhaps an idea of a few quick bucks from the naïve gringo for a bribe crosses their minds.

Honduras, the CIA, the 3-16, and Abner

The United States government's involvement in the political atmosphere of Central America during the 70's,80's, & early 90's left its mark on many. Hundreds of mothers were left without children, or husbands after guerilla attacks sponsored by the U.S., hundreds of innocent victims were left with missing limbs after the explosion of land mines year later, governments were turned, country boundaries were redrawn, and the ever feared communist regimes were dismantled. No cost was too great.

    Meet Harim Jafeth

Meet Harim Jafeth. Little Harim was born with a hole in his heart. 14 month old Harim's heart is now the size of a 90 year old woman's. If Harim did not receive an unavailable in Honduras heart surgery he would have died before age 2.

Harim's case came to Misión Lázaro almost six months ago. The Misión Lázaro medical team, led by nurse practitioner Allison Brown set up an electrocardiogram in Tegucigalpa. After undergoing the electrocardiogram the cardiac specialist broke the bad news to Harim's mom, 24 year old Senaida. Without heart surgery her son would die. A surgery that is not available in Honduras. Allison Brown began researching organizations that carry children to the US for medical procedures. Childspring International out of Atlanta Georgia seemed to be the most promising. Many times applying with these organizations is a shot in the dark. The paper work can seem endless and the communication problems from Honduras to the US at some times made the entire process seem hopeless. But it was not!

It Started Out Like Any Other Sunday

It started out like any other Sunday… in the village of Las Pitas. Since it has not rained in a few months, the trip up through the mountains was hot and very dusty. As we travel along the mountain road you can feel the dust collecting on your teeth. Once we finally arrive in Las Pitas I hop out of the truck and shut the door, a small cloud of dust sprays from the door jams as it closes. It's a bit before 2 and since we don’t start our worship service until 2 we all head down to Abilio’s house for a few minutes. After a little while we all meet back up in the church building under our beautiful, majestic roof. It is not the most acoustic but it is just about as beautiful as they come. Oh, did I mention it’s an acacia tree? From our seat we can see and hear the flocks of parakeets flying around the forest that surrounds us, bright green banana trees now stick out among the brown dry back drop of the forest in the dry season.
